Lap-Band® Palm Beach, Florida
The Lap-Band® system is the name by which most people know the gastric banding procedure. In actuality, Lap-Band® is the registered trademark of Allergan, the manufacturer and marketer of the system. The Lap-Band® was first approved by the FDA in the United States in 2001 and has become a very popular bariatric surgery procedure. The company estimates that over 650,000 Lap-Band® systems have been placed worldwide since its debut. The other gastric banding system available in the marketplace today is the Realize® Band from Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a division of Johnson & Johnson.
How it Works:
The Lap-Band® works the same way as other gastric banding systems in that it restricts the amount of food that can enter the main gastric chamber at any given time. First, Dr. Vaughan will create five tiny incisions in the abdomen through which he passes the medical devices, using specially made trocars as passageways. He will then place the band over the upper portion of the stomach. The restriction is created by tightening the band to form two inter-connected gastric chambers. The smaller upper chamber becomes the primary receptacle for food. The band is connected to tubing, which runs to an injection port placed just under the skin. This injection port allows Dr. Vaughan the ability to increase or decrease the restriction of the band by injecting or removing saline solution through this port after surgery.
Benefits of the Lap-Band®:
The Lap-Band® has all of the general benefits of gastric banding surgery including:
- Excellent weight loss and disease improvement potential.
- The ability to be adjusted after surgery.
- The possibility of reversal or revision of the surgery.
- Lower cost than more invasive procedures such as gastric bypass or sleeve.
